Speak Only Words of Kindness

Speak Only Words Of KindnessIf you didn’t mean it, why did you say it?

In yoga, we refer to your word as a “seed” or “bija.”

Once you’ve planted that seed it will grow. What you said is out there forever and it can never be taken back.

When you’re about to blurt something out that you know you shouldn’t…Inhale, hold, exhale fully and hold. Your breathing practices aren’t solely for  yoga class. Your rate of breathing and state of mind are inseparable. Calm your breath to calm your mind and life.

What you say lives forever. Speak only words of kindness.

Peace, It’s An Inside Job

How peaceful does it feel inside your heart, and inside your own mind?

It’s not always pretty in there- this is why we fill our lives with noise and distractions.

Yoga and meditation is an inward journey. It brings us home to our true selves.

It is a full body prayer for peace inside. If you can create peace within you, it will radiate out into your life.

It’s an inside job.

Give Us Your Presence, Not Your Presents

While you’re  rushing around buying gifts, your friends and family are hungry for  your presence.

Self-inquiry is a key part of any yoga practice. Stop and think about what is important to you.

If the people in your life are important to you then be fully present for them. Give them your time and give them your attention.

Allow them to be fully seen, heard, and  loved by you.

Choose to do things differently.

Winter Solstice

We move from darkness towards the light. We move from frustration, disappointment, anger or resentment to forgiveness of ourselves and others.

We begin again. Prepare now for 2015.

Consider:

1. Who do I need to forgive?

2. What do I need to forgive myself for?

3. What are the things that really matter to me?

4. What are the things that REALLY, really matter to me?

5. What do I want 2015 to be for me?

Forgive, and prioritize what is important to you. Find ways to celebrate life more.

If you need a little help in the forgiveness department, practice this meditation and commit to it for a full 40 Days. There is freedom in forgiveness.

Happy Holidays!

Resurrection~ Come Back to Life

ResurrectionResurrection is defined as, “The act of rising from the dead or returning to life.”

This might be what you long for after extended periods of stress. You want to rise from this exhausted/deadened state and come back to life. Resurrection seems like an appropriate topic for Easter. Whether you celebrate Easter or not, springtime is a time of resurrection, renewal, and rebirth…rather aptly symbolized by this holiday.

What part of you needs to be resurrected?

What aspects of yourself have you left behind?

Did you leave behind the artist, the dancer, the lover?

What used to bring you joy?

What are the things you can do to bring yourself back to life?

Dance more, sing more, love more, give more, live more

What’s Your Mission?

Your Teachers Are EverywhereI’m a big fan of taxi drivers. They have interesting stories to share about their city and its people, and great political insights into their countries of origin.  Their work also turns them into good judges of character.

Today’s taxi ride helped my clarify my mission.

I’ve just left the Yoga Journal Conference in San Francisco. My weekend was full of inspiring workshops and teachers.

From time to time, I’d ask myself, “As a teacher, what is it I really want to share with people?”

Thinking is such an enormous waste of time. I know that what is important will always come to me.
It came to me this morning from Mer, my new taxi driver friend.

Mer….So,Gloria, do you work?
Me…Yes Mer, I teach yoga.
Mer… Oh, you are a teacher. That is good because you smile a lot and have a lot of joy. That way people can learn from you.
My English teacher scared me. I could not learn from him because he made me scared.

So, there it is. I always believed  that what I really want to share is JOY. And Mer, my messenger for the day, just gave me the thumbs up.
