Peace on earth will never be possible if we are unable to achieve peace in our own minds. Saving the world, begins with saving yourself.
The first tenant or “yama” in yoga is Ahimsa. Ahimsa means non violence in thought, action or speech. I often have my students carry around a piece of paper and pencil with them for an entire day, and write down whenever they violate this tenant. That is they must write down whenever they have an unkind thought about themselves or another person, and whenever they act inappropriately to themselves or another person either verbally or through an action. That includes giving the driver that just cut you off the finger, or thinking of yourself as somehow less than others if you cannot achieve a certain yoga pose.
You may surprise yourself at how many times you’ll have to stop and add another item to your “ahimsa list” throughout the day.
So the question I have is how do we achieve world peace, if we are unable to master inner peace?
Start where you are. Use your yoga and meditation practice to become more aware of how you go through your life. Now that you are aware and awake, consciously choose peace in every moment.
