Thinks

Don’t ever let your mind tell you that you can’t.

Yoga and Life

Life is full of uncomfortable situations. Yoga puts you into all sorts of uncomfortable positions and teaches you, through the breath, how to relax. You learn how to stay calm, relax into difficulty, and not lose your focus. These are invaluable tools we could all use off the mat in our daily lives. Next time your boss, partner, children or friends lose their cool, your body will automatically go into deep breathing because you have trained it to through your yoga postures. If you are able to relax and respond in a more calm and centered way, all your relationships, including the one with yourself will improve.

Guilt and Time Management

We need to understand that taking time for ourselves will better the lives of everyone in our circle. Your capacity to love another is only as great as your capacity to love yourself. You are of no value to anyone stressed out and burnt out.

The Nervous System

The focus of our practice is to strengthen the Nervous System. Your bulging, toned muscles are of no use to use to you if the level of stress in your life is making us completely nuts.

Yoga and Flexibility

One of the most common things I hear from people when talking about yoga is “I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible enough.” One of our favourite teachers Bernie Clark says, that’s like saying you’re too dirty to wash.

Mix It Up

Trying one yoga class, doesn’t tell you anything. There are a multitude of styles of yoga, and teachers with their own unique presentation of these styles.  I believe there is a “fit” for every body. It is impossible to take one yoga class and decide whether or not this is something for you. It’s like only ever trying vanilla ice cream and assuming it tastes exactly the same as chocolate. I think people should be open minded in their yoga practice and try different styles. Don’t be political about your yoga!

If I didn’t teach yoga, I think I’d like to be….

My Cousin
This is Gabriella’s godmother and my cousin. We take our retreat group to her restaurant in Greece. I love that she has been written up in Conde Naste for making the absolute best kakavia (bouillabaisse), and she doesn’t know what Conde Naste magazine is. She and her husband were invited to New York to teach how to make their famous fish soup but they said they couldn’t be bothered and would much rather stay in their  idyllic island home.

On Thinking
You are not your mind. If you’re having a thought that bothers you, focus on another one. Thousands of thoughts pass through the mind every wink of the eye.
